Are you keeping count?
Still not upgraded to Windows Vista with the Aero interface? Worry not, Microsoft is already talking about its next version of Windows which is expected to launch in 2010.
Yes, another new operating system which will no doubt need ever more powerful computers to run at an acceptable speed. We don't know any of the technical details as yet but we do know there will be an advertising campaign involving high profile names. Let's hope the adverts are better than this lack-lustre and thoroughly baffling advert for Vista featuring Bill Gates and comedian Jerry Seinfeld:
One thing that puzzles me is that the next version of Windows is codenamed Windows 7. How do they arrive at seven? Since starting using Windows, in 1993 or thereabouts, I've seen Windows 3, Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP and Windows Vista, not to mention the various service packs and the flavours of NT along the way. I make that at least nine desktop versions over the course of 15 years, and it feels like every version has needed a whole new set of printer drivers and software upgrades. Has anything remained constant in that time? Yes, we still have Solitaire.
